At a whopping cost of around R10 million to taxpayers, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) hired as many as 13 private security companies to protect land in Knoflokskraal, Grabouw, from illegal occupation.

This was revealed earlier this week in Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille's parliamentary response to a question from DA MP Cheryl Phillips on the number of security companies employed to prevent further occupations.

De Lille listed the 13 private security companies and said they were used for various periods since 2021 – some for a month and others for two to three months.
