David Coote suspended by PGMOL pending investigation into ...
Refereeing body PGMOL said on Monday that Premier League official David Coote has been "suspended with immediate effect", pending an investigation into a video which surfaced on social media on Monday.
The unverified video showed a man alleged to be Coote using expletives to describe Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp, while also describing the German manager as "arrogant".
A PGMOL statement read: "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation.
"PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."
Having earlier posted on social media that Coote was "insistent to referee chiefs PGMOL that [the] viral video in which he appears is not genuine", Darren Lewis of the Mirror provided an update saying the official "accepted the viral video in which he appears is genuine. However, it is believed he does not recall the content of the discussion, recorded several years ago."
Coote - a Premier League official since 2018 - was the referee during Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
Coote also took charge of the Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United in 2023. The official has also been a lead VAR and was appointed to Euro 2024.
Klopp departed Anfield in the summer after more than eight years in charge of the club.
Liverpool have adjusted to life quickly under their new boss, Arne Slot, and sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
