Palace struggling with set pieces

(Photo: Getty Images)

Nine of the past 11 Premier League goals Crystal Palace have conceded have come from set pieces (3x penalties, 5x corners, 1x free kick).

That mark is tied with Nottingham Forest for the most in the league since Roy Hodgson returned to Palace in April.

Ward: 'We definitely deserved something out of the game'

Crystal Palace captain Joel Ward, spoke to Sky Sports after the defeat: "I think we definitely deserved something out of the game, the way we played as a unit today. We went toe-to-toe with them and it was one moment that maybe caught us off guard. It is one of those, sometimes you get them and sometimes you don't and this time it went against us."

On Arsenal's goal from a quick free-kick restart: "You have to make sure you are alert and switched on. Everyone has to come alive when the ball is dead. It is disappointing but we take it on the chin. We know if we play like we did tonight, going toe-to-toe with one of the best sides in world football right now, we have a great foundation to build on."

Martin Odegaard's goal was his first penalty attempt in a league game since doing so for Vitesse against De Graafschap in the Dutch Eredivisie in May 2019.

The goal was his tenth away from home in the Premier League since the start of last season, which ranks as the third most behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Arsenal reach milestone

Tonight was Arsenal’s 200th Premier League clean sheet away from home.

They become only the third side to reach that milestone, joining Manchester United (205) and Chelsea (204).

Arsenal continue to own London

Arsenal now won three straight Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace, after having won just one of their previous eight against them beforehand (D5 L2).

They have also won their first London derby of the season after dominating such matches last season, when they won 10 and drew two across 12 derby matches.

Gritty win for Arsenal

I've got to be honest: there was a lot about that Arsenal fans won't have liked.

They were so casual after going ahead, and so submissive after going down to 10 men. Very harsh call by the referee though.

But, those gritty wins do a lot for morale. The Arsenal defenders will have loved it.

Fans have to remember: not all last season’s wins were pretty.

Palace battled but no reward

A battling, committed performance from Crystal Palace but just not enough quality or creativity in the final third. They recorded only two shots on target.

No genuine game-changing options off the bench either.

Arsenal remain perfect

Arsenal have endured nervy ends to both of their matches so far this season, but have seen out one-goal wins in both.

They join Manchester City and Brighton as the remaining Premier League teams with perfect records.

FT: Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

The final whistle blows and that's it!

Arsenal breathe a massive sigh of relief as they have managed to hold on down a man and see out the win.

Chance for Mitchell

90+5' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

A loose ball is headed three times in the Arsenal box. Ramsdale comes out to claim it but doesn't manage to claim it.

Mitchell has a chance to shoot on an open net, but with much traffic in front of him he fails to hit the target.

Havertz booked

Second-half stoppage time

90+1' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Seven minutes are added on to the end of the match.

Arsenal have four centre-backs on the pitch and arguably only one attack-minded player — Havertz — on.

Doucoure is booked for a bad foul on Havertz.

Arsenal look to close up shop

90' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal replace a forward and a midfield with two defenders, as Saka and Odegaard come off for Kiwior and Zinchenko.

They have made four subs but are now out of sub opportunities.

Palace attacking in waves

88' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal are sitting deep, playing no one further up the field. The effect of this is that every time they clear the ball, Palace immediately regain possession and put them right back under pressure.

Arsenal holding on

85' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Palace are attacking in waves now, keeping Arsenal under pressure and pinned deep in their own area.

The latest attack sees Mitchell find Edouard in the middle of the box with a lovely cross, but Edouard can't direct his free header on target.

Rak-Sakyi replaces Ward

83' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Twenty-year-old striker Jesurun Rak-Sakyi makes his third career Premier League appearance and first since May 2022, coming on for captain Joel Ward.

Quite an attacking change, which makes sense as Palace try to make their numerical advantage count in the waning minutes here.

Palace have three subs remaining but just one opportunity to do so.

Second change for Arsenal

79' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal make their second change of the match, bringing on Jorginho for Nketiah.

Arsenal halfway to stoppage time

78' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal have made it halfway from Tomiyasu's sending off to 90 minutes.

Palace are controlling much more of the ball now, as you would expect, but they have yet to create a clear-cut chance other than Eze's penalty appeal.

Ahamada joins the fray

74' Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

Palace make their first change as Ahamada comes on for Schlupp.
