Conor McGregor Says New TMZ Video Led Lawyer to Change 'Her ...
Reps for MMA star Conor McGregor called the allegations of sexual assault against him a “shakedown” in a new statement Friday, saying that a video obtained by TMZ caused his accuser’s lawyer to change “her story.”
On Thursday, McGregor, 34, was publicly accused of sexually assaulting a woman inside a VIP bathroom at Miami’s Kaseya Center on June 10, shortly after the venue hosted an NBA Finals game between the hometown Heat and the Denver Nuggets. McGregor's accuser first went to Miami police on Sunday to file a report about the incident.
Video newly obtained by TMZ Sports shows McGregor talking to a woman, whose face is blurred, then leading her by the hand into a bathroom. The bathroom door then shuts, three men assemble outside the door as though to block it and the clip ends.
Representatives for McGregor have denied the allegations. It is unclear where the TMZ video came from and The Messenger has not verified it.
In a statement, McGregor’s team said that the video prompted his accuser’s lawyer to revise the account of the alleged incident. The statement did not elaborate on the changes, but the accuser’s lawyer, Ariel Mitchell, has written in demand letters to McGregor, the NBA and the Miami Heat that league and team security "physically forced" her client into the bathroom. The clip shows McGregor taking the woman by the hand.
“After the video was released by TMZ, the claimant’s lawyer now has changed her story,” the McGregor team's statement reads. “Mr. McGregor welcomes the investigation, which he firmly believes will show the claims against him are false.”
“After not responding to the demand for money made by claimant’s counsel, she turned to the media to apply pressure,” it continued. “This is no more than a shakedown.”
A spokesperson for the Miami Police Department previously told The Messenger that its Special Victims Unit is investigating a report filed Sunday.
McGregor allegedly "shoved his tongue in the victim's mouth,” forced her to perform oral sex and broke the waistband of her pants while pulling them down in an attempt to commit a sex act, Mitchell wrote.
Both the Heat and the NBA acknowledged the allegations, but denied further comment amid ongoing investigations.
During the game the same night, McGregor appeared to knock out Miami Heat mascot Burnie during a promotional event. The hit reportedly left the man who plays Burnie hospitalized.
McGregor later characterized that incident as “all a skit,” saying “all is well.” A spokesperson for the Heat did not respond to a request for comment on that account.
