Participants are encouraged to sign up early as the entry cap for the event is limited to 23,000 runners. The Comrades Marathon Runners Association (CMA) has set a closing date for entries on December 11, 2023, or earlier if the entry cap is reached.

Mqondisi Ngcobo, spokesperson for the CMA, emphasized the importance of early registration to avoid disappointment. He stated, ‘If we don’t receive the expected number of entries before the 11th of December, we will close the registrations, even if it’s before the specified date.’

The Comrades Marathon Runners Relief Fund has also been introduced to assist disadvantaged South African runners. The fund will support up to 1,500 athletes by providing a reduced entry fee of 50 percent. Ngcobo stated, ‘The Comrades Marathon board has allocated one million rand to help those athletes who may struggle to afford the full entry fee of R1,200. Only South African entrants are eligible, and we will offer support to 1,500 athletes, reducing their race entry cost to approximately R600.’

To register for the 2024 Comrades Marathon, interested individuals can visit the official Comrades Marathon website. The following are important dates for the event: Entry Opens – November 21, 2023, Entry Closes – December 11, 2023 (or when the entry cap is reached), Race Date – June 9, 2024.
