The Wimbledon tournament continues Wednesday morning, featuring matches of Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka. The tournament matches will be broadcasted on ESPN and the Tennis Channel. Wimbledon has already experienced numerous upsets in the women’s singles bracket, as some top seeded players have lost in the first round. Specifically, #6 Marketa Vondrousova was swept in her first round match against Jessica Maneiro on Tuesday morning. Additionally, #8 Qinwen Zheng lost her opening round match to Lulu Sun on Monday morning. These upsets have occurred in the men’s bracket as well, which showcases the unpredictable nature of the competition.
Two high-profile tennis players won their first round Wimbledon match, Gauff and Osaka. In Gauff’s opening round, she easily swept her American opponent to advance. Meanwhile, Osaka had to overcome a deficit to win her matchup.
Gauff reached the French Open semifinals last month, so she has been playing well in recent tournaments. Although she ended up losing to #1 Iga Swiatek in the French Open, Gauff showcased that she can compete with the top players in women’s tennis.
Gauff’s second round match is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. CT on Wednesday morning, and she will face off against Anca Todoni.
Osaka was at the top of her game a few years ago, winning the Australian Open in 2021. However, she has dealt with early exits and injuries since that tournament victory. Additionally, she stepped away from tennis last year due to pregnancy. Despite her past struggles, she is looking to return to high level tennis form at Wimbledon this year.
Osaka experienced some adversity midway through her first round match, but she was able to comeback and win, which will increase her confidence during future matches. Osaka will need this confidence during her second round matchup, as she will play against #19 Emma Navarro at 9:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday morning.
