Club Brugge 1-0 Aston Villa Stats: Villa's Winning UCL Run Comes ...
Aston Villa’s 100% start in the Champions League came to an end with a disappointing 1-0 defeat in Belgium. Look back at the game via the Opta data with our Club Brugge vs Aston Villa stats page.
A Hans Vanaken second-half penalty was the difference as Aston Villa’s winning start to life in the UEFA Champions League ended with this 1-0 defeat away at Club Brugge.
The Belgian side were given the chance to score from the penalty spot in confusing circumstances, as Tyrone Mings was adjudged to have handled the ball illegally following what the referee deemed a legitimate goal kick from goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Both Villa players claimed otherwise, but their mistake led to the only goal of the game.
Mings became the first English player to concede a penalty on their Champions League debut, while Vanaken’s spot-kick was the first ever goal conceded by Aston Villa in the competition.
Unai Emery’s side offered little going forward, only attempting one shot on target in the entire match. The form of striker Ollie Watkins will be of concern, too. The England international has scored just once in his last seven appearances, and struggled again tonight.
Villa underwhelmed in this match despite entering Matchday 4 top of the UCL league phase with three wins from three. It follows back-to-back Premier League defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, and they’ll be nervous ahead of this weekend with a trip to Anfield on Saturday against Premier League leaders Liverpool.
