The Tshwane multiparty government has issued a statement against the ANC's motion of no confidence in Mayor Cilliers Brink.

The signees of the statement argue that the motion is not about service delivery, but rather about the ANC's business interests in waste collection contracts.

The multiparty government expressed confidence in facing the motion with its majority but urged the Republican Conference Tshwane including the Patriotic Alliance, Congress of the People, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, GOOD, African Transformation Movement, and African Independent Congress to stand against the motion and not "support the ANC to further ANC business interests."

"We will not allow the ANC to undo all the progress we've made in the name of self-interest."

The statement added:

If the motion is tabled on Thursday, we will be ready to vote it down and continue to serve the people of Tshwane.

Earlier on Thursday, the office of the chief whip of the majority party (official opposition) released a statement accusing the Speaker of Council, Mcendi Nzwanana, of acting under instruction from the DA-led coalition regarding the ward committee elections.

They claimed the coalition was desperate to cancel the current process.

"During the weekend, the DA-led coalition lost control of elections in Centurion and other parts of the City. The coalition is planning to challenge the outcomes of these meetings through secretive caucuses with certain 'stakeholders'," said Aaron Maluleka.

Maluleka further stated that Tshwane had suffered a decade-long absence from ward committees and accused the former Speaker of Council, Katlego Mathebe, of obstructing their formation.

Additionally, Maluleka alleged that the city manager had created an "army" of former colleagues acting on behalf of Mayor Brink to remove senior managers and that the mayor's office had replaced black African support staff with white DA members.

Maluleka said the ANC caucus has submitted an urgent motion of no confidence against Brink, in accordance with the Rules and Orders of Council.

"We have explained our reasons for the urgency and expect a favourable response from the Speaker of Council."

Maluleka said:

We have engaged progressive minority parties and are meeting with parties from the DA-led coalition who have shown interest in this motion.
