The Dean of Jersey - the Very Reverend Mike Keirle - has issued a his Christmas message for 2023.

Reverend Keirle used his festive message this year to talk about the meaning of joy.

He said joy was based on the principle "that God is with us".

Jersey's Chief Minister Kristina Moore also issued a Christmas message - praising islanders for their resilience in 2023.

'The meaning of joy'

Reverend Keirle said: "Here's a question for you at this festive moment: What exactly is joy?

"I mean, many of us will enjoy Christmas with plenty of happiness and laughter and fun - enduring the worst possible cracker jokes that make us groan more than laugh.

"But sometimes though, Christmas happiness is a little artificial, or perhaps superficial or fleeting, lacking deeper meaning.

"Often, and especially at this time of the year, it comes at a price - one way or the other. So, joy isn't really just enjoying ourselves, or enjoying things.

"A quick glance at the dictionary tells me joy is defined as intense gladness, rapture, delight, or happiness. You see again, I'm not convinced that does justice to the word either.

"I've seen people in really difficult times experience joy. Some of the poorest people I ever met when I lived in Africa were people filled with joy, and it stuck out a mile."

The Chief Minister spoke about how 2023 had seen an "unprecedented number of events" which had challenged islanders

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Deputy Moore said in her message: "This year has seen an unprecedented number of events that have challenged us all.

"Throughout, Islanders have demonstrated what a strong, resilient and kind community we're fortunate to live in. And this will be in evidence again over Christmas as we spend precious time with our family, friends and neighbours.

"These are, however, difficult times for many Islanders and I hope the festive period will provide some opportunity for you to rest, re -energise and look forward to next year."
