The teams have met twice already this season, with differing results.

In the Premier League, Newcastle thrashed ten-man Chelsea 4-1 at St James' Park on November 25, with Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon on the scoresheet for the hosts, with Raheem Sterling the only scorer for the visitors, who also had captain Reece James sent off.

But on December 19, Chelsea prevailed in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Mykhailo Mudryk's stoppage-time equaliser cancelled out Callum Wilson's goal, before Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie missed their spot-kicks as Mauricio Pochettino's side won 4-2 on penalties.

With the home team winning both of their fixtures against each other this season, Chelsea will hope for another victory tonight.

How's the Premier League table looking?

Disappointingly, from the perspective of Chelsea and Newcastle, you have to look all the way down to mid-table to see these two teams.

Newcastle are 10th, only just in the top half, though if they win tonight they would overtake West Ham in seventh.

While Chelsea are 11th, and even a win would see them remain behind their opponents tonight.

It must be pretty embarrassing for the owners, having spent so much money and targeted the top four, to be so far away from that. They could well finish in the bottom half for the second season running. And no European qualification would be a big financial hit (more on that below).

In September 2023, Claude Makelele announced he was leaving Chelsea after four years as a technical mentor to the club’s young players.

He posted on social media at the time that the decision had been reached by “mutual consent”, that he was going to “seek a fresh, new challenge” and that “blue will always be the colour of my heart”.

In Doha, Qatar, Makelele speaks to The Athletic to elaborate on his departure, the new era he left behind at Stamford Bridge and his plans for those next steps.
