The year as a whole has been a pretty disastrous one for Chelsea on the pitch. There has been four different head coaches, albeit two of them were on an interim basis, and results and performances on the pitch have been awful.

For Mauricio Pochettino, though, it is up to him now to try and put the defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Christmas Eve behind him and his players with Palace next up. The Blues have been a lot better at Stamford Bridge recently, so they will be hoping they can continue their home form this evening against the Eagles.

Palace, managed by Roy Hodgson, have not won a Premier League game since November 4 when they went to Burnley and beat them 2-0. The south Londoners have come in for plenty of criticism recently and Chelsea will be looking to pile even more misery on them tonight.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace predictions

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that Chelsea can get back to winning ways when they face Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Despite the Blues struggling with injuries, Lawrenson believes they have the depth to deal with it while the Eagles don't in the busy festive schedule.

Ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton is also backing the west Londoners to come out on top, but in a clash that will be slightly tighter.

He told BBC Sport: "I hope I do better at predicting Chelsea's results in 2024 than I have managed this year. They have had some odd defeats at home, as well as away - so the fact they are at Stamford Bridge doesn't really help me much.

Chelsea's search for a striker in January – the latest

The January transfer window is fast approaching and it is expected to be a relatively busy period for Chelsea. While it is not expected to match the club's recent windows in terms of quantity, the Blues are still looking to improve on Mauricio Pochettino's options for the remainder of the season.

It is not a secret that Chelsea are looking to sign a No.9 and plan on doing so in the January transfer window. However, as football.london understands, the Blues will not rush in a market that is often limited in terms of options, and are prepared to wait until the summer should the right opportunity not arise next month.

Pochettino reflects on Chelsea season so far

Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on Chelsea's season so far. Speaking to the club's official website, the Argentine said:

The performance from the beginning of the season is not bad. We could have said it's very good, but in terms of competing we are at the bottom. That is why we are not in a better position in the table.

Football is about having all the quality and knowledge in your set-ups, the way you press and build from the back, and so on. Then at some point during the 90 minutes, you need to compete: that is the moment you need to show you can play another [style of] football. We need to improve there.
