Lewis Hall felt Chelsea’s efforts in front of goal at Old Trafford summed up our 2022/23 campaign, but the young left-back has seen enough signs to believe next season is going to be a different story for the Blues.

Hall enjoyed another quietly impressive game and on another day he would have had two assists and maybe even a goal to his name, but our finishing let us down once again and with Manchester United much more clinical at the other end, we were well beaten in our final away fixture this term.

‘We had chances, especially in the first half where going into half-time we definitely didn’t feel like we should be 2-0 down,’ Hall assessed.

‘That’s how it’s been all season really, struggling to score goals. It’s disappointing. We should be scoring these chances. They weren’t half-chances. They were good chances which other teams put away against us. We need to improve on that.’

For Hall it has been a season of good personal development. He has now played 10 times, with seven of those appearances coming against four of the Premier League’s current top five.

The 18-year-old has not looked out of place testing himself against some of Europe’s elite, even if our current circumstances have been far from ideal for a young player finding his feet at a top club. He reflected on the steps he has taken and underlined the collective desire for progress when the players meet up again in early July.

‘It’s been really good, but also difficult at the same time coming into a side that’s struggling a bit,’ said Hall.

‘There’s no doubt the talent we have in the dressing room. The squad is amazing. It just takes a while for everyone to gel, so it’s been difficult in that sense, but for me it’s been a good learning experience to come in and train and play with these great players.

‘Hopefully I, and we as a team, can push on next season and give the fans what they deserve, and what they missed this year,’ he continued.

‘I’m really looking forward to next season. We all are. We know how frustrating it’s been, not just for us but all the fans, the staff, everyone. We’ve all been putting so much hard work in. There’s no doubt about the work rate and the effort we’ve put in.

‘The talent is clearly there. You can see in glimpses how good we are but it’s about putting it all together. Hopefully we can come in and have a good pre-season and hit the ground running.’
