Fofana reflects on a 'special' Foxes return
When Wesley Fofana made his way through the tunnel to conduct a media interview with us after the game, he was stopped on a number of occasions to speak with former colleagues from Leicester City.
He may now wear the blue of Chelsea rather than the Foxes, but behind-the-scenes it’s clear he remains a popular figure in the East Midlands. In fact, the smiling Frenchman was only too happy to catch-up with old faces.
When we eventually get round to our interview, we put the question to Wesley on how he found returning to the King Power on the pitch, given the resounding chorus of boos he received from the home fans each time he touched the ball.
For Wesley, securing the three points was all the talking he needed in response to that!
‘It was a good return for me, for sure!’ Fofana stated post-match. ‘I had many good years here with Leicester so to come back here and get the win with Chelsea, it means a lot.
‘It’s a very good feeling to get the win and head back to London with the three points because we knew this would be a difficult game.
‘Playing after the international break is always difficult, especially as the early game, because we have a lot of players away with their nations.
‘So, this was an important win for us. I thought we played very well, it’s a good three points and for sure this is the most important thing.
‘The one little negative was conceding at the end - we wanted the clean sheet - but the job was done, and we got the three points to take back to London. That’s the main thing!
‘It keeps us in a good place in the Premier League standings going into a busy period of fixtures and now we just need to keep pushing forward.’
Fofana started the game in a slightly different role to usual, with Enzo Maresca deploying him in a hybrid right-back position – which also saw him slot into a right-sided centre-half of a back three when in possession.
It’s a position Fofana occupied in our away win at West Ham earlier this season and the French defender has said he doesn’t mind where Maresca selects him, as long as he can play his part in helping the team to victory.
‘I enjoyed it!’ Wesley said of his new position, with a beaming smile.
‘To be totally honest, I don’t really care where I play. Wherever the manager wants me to play, I’m happy to do my job.
‘Whenever I pull on the Chelsea shirt, I just try to do my best and help the team in any way I can. I enjoy playing right-back or centre-back, wherever I’m needed!’
