Stellenbosch FC retained bragging rights in the Cape Derby after recording a resounding 3-0 Betway Premiership win over Cape Town City on Wednesday evening.

Stellies extended their unbeaten run against Cape Town City to eight matches, dating back to the start of 2021, after claiming a 3-0 league win over their cross-town rivals at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.

Steve Barker’s side were quick out of the blocks in Cape Town and came close to opening the scoring within three minutes of kick-off when Devin Titus was denied only by an outstretched toe from City ‘keeper Darren Keet.

That near-miss appeared to serve as a wake-up call for the Citizens who pushed forward at the other end, and they would have found the net were it not for Sage Stephens bravely saving Darwin González’s close-range effort with his face.

End-to-end action ensued throughout the remainder of the half but it was the Maroons who eventually broke the deadlock through Andre de Jong.

Jayden Adams played a neat backheel pass to the New Zealand forward who was afforded time and space outside the City box, and he made no mistake by firing home an unstoppable effort from range.

Buoyed by that goal, Stellies made a fast start to the second half and doubled their lead shortly after the restart with a Goal of the Season contender from left-back Fawaaz Basadien.

From a City corner, the ball was cleared to Basadien who spotted Keet off his line in the opposite box, and the full-back perfectly executed his lobbed effort from well inside his own half.

The two-goal lead quickly became three when Ashley Cupido picked out Sanele Barns with a perfectly weighted cross at the far post, and the new arrival from Richards Bay was on hand to head home his first goal for the club.

Cupido himself had a chance to get on the scoresheet late in the tie after substitute Langelihle Phili was fouled in the box, but the Stellies No. 9 was denied by Keet from the penalty spot.

Nonetheless, the damage had already been done, and the team from the Cape Winelands emerged victorious to retain bragging rights in the Cape Derby.
