Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has called upon his charges not to underestimate Mbabane Swallows ahead of their CAF Champions League clash.
Beating Sundowns over 30 games is a different ballgame – Steve BarkerMngqithi’s caution comes in the wake of Sundowns’ recent struggles. The club is reeling from two consecutive defeats, adding up to four losses in their last five competitive matches, including a disappointing exit in the Champions League semifinals last season.
“It’s very important to respect the opponents and not go into a game with a preconceived idea that this is a game where you need to stamp your authority.
“Go into a game with an open mind, with a lot of respect and humility, to play against any opposition with the same respect that you would give if we were playing Al Ahly or Esperance,” he said.
Mngqithi further reflected on the team’s previous setbacks, noting that the issues were more mental than technical, making comparisons to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
“The suffering of Paris last year was not because of the quality of the Paris team; it was more on the mentality of the players, how much they wanted the match. You will never win a championship if you’ve got small games,” he added.
Sundowns will need to shed their recent poor form and demonstrate a renewed mindset if they are to advance in the competition. The encounter against Mbabane Swallows is pivotal for the Brazilians, who will be looking to turn their fortunes around and rekindle their competitive edge.
The match is scheduled for Saturday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, kicking off at 20:00.
