Fleetwood Town’s Under-18s progressed to round four of the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night at Highbury Stadium.
Town needed the goal that made the difference on the half hour mark thanks to a smart set piece routine which found Conor Haughey in the box to prod the ball home.
Fleetwood started on the back foot against the Championship outfit, with having to defend some intelligent football from the away side. But Town weathered the early storm to create chances of their own.
Liam Roberts caused the Clarets trouble on a number of occasions before the opener as he broke away to Wilkinson in the box midway through the half, but Rylee couldn’t keep his strike down.
Town opened the scoring when Pele Smith started a smart routine which ended up with Smith driving the ball into the six yard box to put it on a plate for Haughey who directed the ball goalwards.
It was Town again who pressed in the second half and should’ve made it two when Mikey Lane broke away down the wing driving the ball into the box beating the keeper but Lucas Taylor couldn’t get the ball out of his feet to direct towards goal.
The Cods saw it out with some superb defending in the later exchanges of the game and despite Burnley finding the back of the net, Fleetwood’s high line ensured the flag went up and Town headed into the fourth round.
