A 20-year-old woman from the US was found dead on a hiking trail on Devil's Peak, the Western Cape police said on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said a search party found the woman's body at around 14:00.

"The body of the missing hiker was found in an area which is part of Devil's Peak, and was retrieved by EMS helicopter," Pojie said.

An inquest docket has been opened.

"An autopsy will be conducted to determine the possible cause of death," he said.
