The 2023/24 Premier League season is under way and you can follow every game and every goal right here with The Independent.

This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Follow the latest action from the Premier League below.

Brentford FC 2 - 0 Sheffield United FC

17:07

All over at the Gtech Community Stadium and it’s a much-needed 2-0 victory for the hosts! Brentford get their first win over Sheffield United in six attempts, while the visitors fail to claim their sixth ever Premier League double over a side. All the action came in that second half, with the Blades undone by poor defending from both the opening goal, which Arblaster’s oustretched leg poked home for Damsgaard, and in the Bees’ injury-time second as substitutes Schade and Onyeka combined to outwit the defence. The hosts should have had a third sandwiched in between, but Damsgaard’s stunner from an Mbeumo free-kick was chalked off for a foul on McBurnie in the box. Zanka also had a tap-in disallowed for a clear offside, but ultimately that was a comfortable win for the Bees. The hosts have their first home win since January and end with an xG of 1.12 compared to 0.76 for the Blades, who have continued their unfortunate trend of failing to keep a clean sheet on the road, which extends back to May 2021. Brentford are up to 14th in the league, seven points clear of relegation, while unlucky United are ten points from safety. Thanks for reading!

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:59

FULL-TIME: BRENTFORD 2-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:57

Brentford are driving forward again now. Yarmolyuk fancies it with none of his teammates in easy reach but skies his shot over the bar.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:56

The Gtech Community Stadium is in fine voice now with three points looking secured for the hosts. It wasn't a convincing performance but they improved significantly over this second half. United, however, have defended very poorly at times.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:54

GOOOOAAALLL! Those substitutions have worked a dream for Brentford and they're 2-0 up! It's not massively pretty, but it'll do as Schade spins the ball into Onyeka's path and he drives it home past Grbic!

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:53

Goal Ogochukwu Frank Onyeka

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:52

There will be EIGHT added minutes, mostly thanks to that VAR check.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:50

And captain Jensen is hooked for Onyeka.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:50

Substitution Mason Anthony Holgate Anis Ben Slimane

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:50

Wissa is replaced by another defender in Pinnock.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:50

United have shown a bit of pace on the counter but not the quality needed to actually see it through. Brentford can't properly repossess and Brereton Diaz tries to keep a long ball in but can only hoof the ball over the crossbar.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:49

Substitution Bryan Tetsadong Marceau Mbeumo Kevin Schade

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:49

Jensen takes a throw-in. It eventually falls to Yarmolyuk but McBurnie's big frame is there to clear it.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:47

Yellow Card Mads Roerslev Rasmussen

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:46

Big chance for Brentford again! Lewis-Potter rounds Trusty and Ahmedhodzic and fires at goal but Grbic does well to palm away his shot for a Brentford corner. McBurnie makes the vital headed clearance at the near post.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:44

Brentford have sat back a bit since that disallowed goal, inviting United on to them. In a busy few minutes, Jensen goes down clutching his knee and gingerly gets back up. Then Mbeumo makes a brilliant run down the left and squares to Wissa, but Holgate makes the crucial intervention with the forward through on goal.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:42

Wasted chance for the visitors! Brereton Diaz tees up Archer at the far post but he curls his cross wide and out for a Brentford throw-in.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:40

Lewis-Potter immediately drives forward with almost his first touch of the game but is frustrated by a couple of defenders. Reguilon's cross from the loose ball goes nowhere and United try to counter, but the ball goes dead after a bad touch by McAtee.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:38

Substitution Neal Maupay Keane William Lewis-Potter

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:37

Substitution Mikkel Krogh Damsgaard Yehor Yarmoliuk

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:37

This time Flekken convincingly catches and does a little figure-of-eight before taking the goal kick.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:36

Osborn curls in a corner which Flekken palms over his own crossbar, conceding another corner.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:35

Bogle is replaced by Archer.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:35

Bogle looks to be in some pain as he's helped up by two medical staff and shuffles very gingerly off the pitch.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:34

United push forward but can't get anywhere. Trusty goes down under pressure from Jensen, tripping over Mbeumo, before Bogle does down clutching his angle after a very heavy touch-stroke-attempt on goal.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:31

It's chalked off. Collins is judged to have brought down McBurnie as the free-kick was being taken. Seems rather harsh - back to 1-0 to Brentford.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:29

GOOOAAALLLL! The Bees have a two-goal cushion! Mbeumo crosses it wide to Damsgaard, who now gets a goal to his name as well as an assist. He doesn't even take a touch, just slams the volley home with his right foot into the far left side of the net. But wait...

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:29

VAR are checking for a possible foul in the buildup as referee Sam Barrott is called to the pitchside monitor.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:27

Things go from bad to worse for United: Trusty pulls down Mbeumo and concedes a free kick on the edge of the box on the far right. It's in a good place...

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:27

Assist Bryan Tetsadong Marceau Mbeumo

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:27

Brentford are looking a lot more threatening now, a real sense of purpose to the hosts after that (very fortunate) goal. United have now scored six own goals this season, more than any other side.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:26

United try to recover from that as McBurnie curls a cross in to Holgate at the far post, but Flekken gets both gloves to his attempt. How can the Blades respond now?

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:23

Own goal Oliver Luke Arblaster

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:21

Zanka heads away a smart cross as United drive forward but concedes a corner. Osborn takes, McBurnie gets a head to it but appears to slip in the process. The visitors win another corner but Flekken catches Osborn's second go.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:19

United's defensive line continues to frustrate the Bees, who throw bodies forward but can't get a move to stick. On the left, Reguilon curls in a cross but Grbic gathers easily.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:18

First substituton of the game, and it's an attacking one by Wilder. Larouci, who has been pretty industrious, is replaced by McAtee.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:16

Disallowed goal for Brentford! Jensen's free kick is excellent, Zanka is right there just yards from goal, and it's an easy tap-in past a floundering Grbic - but there was an offside in the buildup. Can Brentford capitalise on their momentum?

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:14

Trusty stamps on Mbeumo's foot and concedes a free kick, out wide on the right for Brentford. Jensen stands over it...

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:12

Great challenge by Roerslev! Bogle gets the better of several Brentford shirts as he drives down the middle but Roerslev puts in a sliding challenge to deflect the ball back away from goal.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:11

Maupay trips up Holgate and almost goes down himself, and that's the end of a Brentford move. Mbeumo does an acrobatic spin in midfield and appears to accidentally whack Bogle in the face or chest, but no damage appears to have been done.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:09

No changes for either side after the restart, by the way. Sheffield try to push forward but it goes out for goal kick by Flekken.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:08

First chance of the half! Reguilon and Janelt combine well down the left, evade a couple of defenders, and Reguilon fires in a cross - but Grbic is there to collect. Not a bad start for the hosts.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

16:04

KICK-OFF: BRENTFORD 0-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED. Back underway in West London.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:59

Brentford ventured out of their half significantly more after a slightly tentative start, making 29 final third entries to United’s 17. With Toney warming up on the sideline towards the end of that half Frank may be thinking of bringing in reinforcements to get three much-needed points secured. Opta has adjusted its win predictions: Brentford are still favourites to win it at 47 per cent, but the likelihood of a draw has increased to 37 per cent – a result that really suits neither side. Let’s see if either team brings the fireworks after the restart…

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:55

All square at the Gtech Community Stadium after a very even first half. The hosts have had 55 per cent possession and an xG of 0.8 compared to the Blades’ 45 per cent and 0.28 xG, so there’s not a lot in it thus far. After a couple of wasted chances for Brereton Diaz the visitors faded a bit in attack towards the end of that first half, but manager Wilder will be fairly impressed with their industrious start. The Bees have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal too, and should really be ahead, with Maupay wasting the best chance so far by poking just wide.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:51

HALF-TIME: BRENTFORD 0-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:50

Brentford have a long spell of possession. Roerslev takes a throw-in which isn't properly dealt with, Reguilon tries to keep his side in it but is frustrated by Holgate down the far left. And that's the last action of the half!

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:48

One added minute here at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:47

Brereton Diaz is the next to be booked.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:47

Sheffield on the counter! The visitors win a corner, it's deep from Osborn and McBurnie gets to it but there's no one to receive his knockdown and it's cleared.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:43

Yellow Card Vitaly Janelt

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:43

Several Brentford shirts are warming up, including Toney. The hosts have had 55 per cent possession and the better chances so far. Now Wissa heads a glancing shot from a Janelt cross straight at Grbic.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:40

What might have been for Brentford - it's a huge, huge chance! Ahmedhodzic has a howler, passing straight to Mbeumo, who squares it for Maupay brilliantly positioned in front of goal. He dives to shoot to avoid Grbic but it rolls just millimetres wide of the open goal!

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:38

Maupay and Grbic almost get in a tangle as the ex-Brighton man desperately tries to make something of an awkward long ball.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:38

Mbeumo and Jensen stand over the free-kick. It's in a good space for Brentford... but Mbeumo punts it into the middle of nowhere.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:37

Well played by Osborn, who gets the better of Mbeumo as he looks to sprint into space and put an end to a promising-looking Brentford attack. The Bees win a free-kick thanks to a Hamer challenge on Reguilon.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:35

Big chance for Brentford! Wissa and Jensen link up well and it's an excellent pass by Reguilon back to Jensen, who takes a touch to steady himself before firing at goal from 25 yards out - but it's not enough to trouble Grbic, who collects safely.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:33

Some sloppy play from both sides. Brentford give away possession cheaply at the left sideline but once they regain it, can't do much with it. Grbic takes a goal kick.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:29

Jensen takes the corner to Roerslev out near the penalty spot but his awkward shot at goal is way off target. Wasted chance for Brentford.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:28

This has felt like a very stop-start game so far, with neither side being able to sustain pressure for very long. Larouci gets his head to a long ball but his attempt to head it towards his keeper goes out for a Brentford corner.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:27

Grbic makes his first save! The Blades' keeper has had very little to do, but Janelt gets onto a better cross by Jensen and has a go at goal. No luck, however.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:27

Brereton Diaz rounds two defenders and has another punt at goal but skies his shot over the bar. He's looked the most threatening for Sheffield so far.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:24

A Roerslev throw in lands straight in Grbic's gloves. Down the other end Damsgaard tries to get away but Osborn is right on him, then Larouci frustrates Mbeumo.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:23

Feels very even so far at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford take three or four throw ins in quick succession but can't make any attack stick. Captain McBurnie is marshalling the Sheffield defence well.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:20

Larouci does well to sprint onto a stray ball before Mbeumo - who has looked the most promising for the home side - can get there. Grbic hoofs it out of danger.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:18

Sheffield attack! The visitors have a throw in dangerously close to the Brentford goal, taken by Holgate. It's kicked clear - both sides are doing well to frustrate the other.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:16

Free kick for Brentford; it's cleared but Brentford refuse to go away. Larouci wins a duel with Mbeumo down the right but the Bees keep coming! Reguilon gets onto a cross from Roerslev, having lost Larouci this time, but his header skews over the bar.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:13

Early chance for Sheffield! Brereton Diaz dives through acres of space and is one-on-one with Flekken with Brentford scrambling behind him - but Brereton Diaz miscontrols his feet and Flekken gets the ball.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:12

Plenty of pressure from the visitors - most of the action has been in Brentford's half. Now Mbeumo does well to keep the ball in play down the right near the Blades' goal, but the visitors' defence are doing well so far to frustrate the Bees.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:09

Yellow Card Neal Maupay

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:08

It's been a bright, purposeful start for Sheffield. Larouci gathers a cross near the post but it's deflected behind for a corner. It's cleared quickly by Zanka.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:06

Sheffield have a spell of possession to start, but Brentford are looking more lively. The ball ends up near the home goal first but a Brentford counter gets to the quick feet of Mbeumo. He can't make anything of it down the right hand side.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

15:03

KICK-OFF: BRENTFORD V SHEFFIELD UNITED. The players take the knee before the visitors get us underway.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:59

The teams are out on the pitch and we’re about to get underway! Opta suggests a 63 per cent chance of a Brentford victory today, 23 per cent for a draw and just under 14 per cent for Sheffield United win. Let’s see if that proves true…

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:59

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder makes one change from their draw with Chelsea, replacing skipper Jack Robinson with Yasser Larouci, who makes his first start in six games.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:54

Brentford manager Thomas Frank makes one personnel change and also a formation change, opting for 4-3-3 with Kristoffer Ajer dropping out and Neal Maupay starting in attack. That changes means Frank has brought the big guns in attack, starting joint top scorers Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo alongside second-top scorer Maupay. England forward Ivan Toney is still on the bench due to a slight muscle issue, as are long-term injury absentees Kevin Schade and Ethan Pinnock.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:54

SHEFFIELD UNITED SUBS: Cameron Archer, Oliver Norwood, Wes Foderingham, Vinicius Souza, Anis Ben Slimane, James McAtee, Sam Curtis, William Osula, Andre Brooks.

14:49

SHEFFIELD UNITED (3-5-2): Ivo Grbic; Auston Trusty, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Mason Holgate; Yasser Larouci, Ben Osborn, Oliver Arblaster, Gustavo Hamer, Jayden Bogle; Oliver McBurnie, Ben Brereton-Diaz.

BRENTFORD SUBS: Ethan Pinnock, Kevin Schade, Saman Ghoddos, Frank Onyeka, Ivan Toney, Thomas Strakosha, Keane Lewis-Potter, Shandon Baptiste, Yehor Yarmolyuk.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:44

BRENTFORD (4-3-3): Mark Flekken; Sergio Reguilon, Nathan Collins, Zanka, Mads Roerslev; Mikkel Damsgaard, Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen; Yoane Wissa, Neal Maupay, Bryan Mbeumo.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:39

Rock-bottom Sheffield United are nine points adrift of safety and have the league’s worst away record, but they’ve only lost one of the four most recent games and held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge last time out. And they’ve got the better of Brentford recently: the Blades are unbeaten in their last five fixtures, including winning the reverse 1-0 at Bramall Lane, and have outscored the Bees 8-3 in that time.

Brentford vs Sheffield United

14:39

It’s a battle between two Premier League strugglers today. Brentford are seeking to end a nine-game winless run and haven’t won at home since January 20th, drawing 3-3 with Aston Villa last time out. That result – and a further two-point deduction for Everton - leaves the Bees in 15th place, just four points clear of the drop zone with six matches left to play.
