DIAZ RESCUES LIVERPOOL AFTER LUTON THREATEN SHOCK TRIUMPH

Luis Diaz put aside a week of personal anguish to emerge from the bench and rescue a 1-1 draw for Liverpool at Luton Town.

The Colombia forward’s involvement was again uncertain after the kidnapping of his parents last week, but he returned following a two-match absence to head in a 95th-minute leveller.

It was a late blow for The Hatters who thought they were on the verge of a famous win when substitute Tahith Chong slid home on the counter attack 10 minutes from time.

Jurgen Klopp’s visitors had started brightly and carved out several opportunities in an open first half, but could not find the breakthrough with the lively Darwin Nunez clipping the bar with one of a number of attempts.

Liverpool tried to step it up a gear following the interval, but it was the hosts who should have gone in front when Carlton Morris was brilliantly denied by Alisson after superb work by Chiedozie Ogbene.

Nunez then had his blushes spared by the offside flag when he blazed a miss of the season contender over the top before the hosts stunned the Merseysiders on 80 minutes.

A lightning break from a Liverpool corner ended with substitute Chong sliding a low shot beyond Alisson to send Kenilworth Road into ecstasy.

The home team looked like seeing out the win but Diaz emerged as a late substitute to head in Harvey Elliott’s cross deep into time added on. The Reds forward celebrated by lifting his jersey to reveal a message: ‘Freedom for Dad.’

The result means Liverpool miss the opportunity to close to within a point of leaders Manchester City and are now three adrift of the champions in third spot. Luton’s point shifts them up to 17th and out of the drop zone on goal difference.

LUTON DUO REACT TO HARD-FOUGHT DRAW WITH HEAVYWEIGHT REDS

CHONG: "When you score that late you are thinking of winning the game, but obviously they have quality and we know they will keep coming at us. Unfortunately they scored, but we are very proud of the team."

OGBENE: "I was praying for a VAR check (when Liverpool scored). But you can't fault the effort tonight. We are slightly disappointed we didn't get three points against a very, very good Liverpool team.

"That's how far we've come. We are happy with a point. If you can't win, you don't lose and that's what happened today."

THE PREMIER LEAGUE STANDINGS

Liverpool edge up to third spot, but are now three points adrift of leaders Man City.

Luton rise out of the drop zone up to 17th, above Bournemouth on goal difference.

We nearly had a sensational upset, but instead we get a heart-warming story as Diaz puts aside a tough week personally following the kidnapping of his parents, to rise from the bench and rescue a point.

End of 2nd Half

Luton Town 1-1 Liverpool.

Kabore thunders in a shot from the right side of the box but Alisson pushes it to safety.

Heartbreak for Luton, who were so, so close to a famous win.

Liverpool are trying to pull off a dramatic victory now but time is against them.

That's the message on a T-shirt underneath Diaz's LFC top.

GOAL! - LUTON TOWN 1-1 LIVERPOOL

It had to Luis Diaz! The forward comes off the bench to rescue the visitors as he rises at the back post to nod in Elliott's cross.

LIVERPOOL DON'T LOOK LIKELY

There's still time for the visitors, but the home side are pretty comfortable.

Eight minutes for Luton to hang on.

The result will mean Liverpool will miss the opportunity to close to within a point of leaders Manchester City and will be four adrift of the champions in fourth spot. Luton’s first home win will shift them up to 17th and out of the drop zone on eight points.

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR LIVERPOOL TO RESCUE A POINT

Luton have dealt with most of what the away side have thrown at them for much of the contest.

Konate flicks a header from a left-wing cross wide of the far post.
