Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the decision to redeploy Bonginkosi Khanyile from the party youth leadership, and three other youth leaders, was made after careful consideration and was intended to strengthen their drive towards winning a two-thirds majority in the forthcoming elections.

Khanyile's dismissal was announced in a letter dated 9 April 2024, but no explanation was provided.

The letter read:

You are hereby removed from the position of national coordinator uMkhonto weSizwe Youth League (MKYL). This removal is effective from today.

“Your role going forward will be to be a normal member of the MKYL.”

The letter said that Khanyile would be notified of his redeployment in due course.

“MK Party appreciates your role played thus far,” it added.

Khanyile, who is not on the MKP list of candidates for Parliament, was appointed in January of this year as the MKYL leader, a month after the Patriotic Alliance (PA) removed him as a member after he had attended an MKP rally addressed by former president Jacob Zuma in December.

Before joining the PA, Khanyile was an active member of the ANC and the EFF. He is also charged with inciting the riots that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal in July 2021.

MKP also removed Philani Nduli as the provincial coordinator of MKYL in Gauteng, Thapelo Maisha as deputy president of the MKYL and Minenhle Cibane as interim secretary-general of the party, with immediate effect.

Nduli is a long-time acquaintance of Khanyile and refers to himself as "Khanyile's confidant".

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ndhlela said:

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to comrades Khanyile, Cibane, Maisha and Nduli for their invaluable contributions in their previous roles.

He said that the party's mission was to promote land expropriation for the landless, address the difficulty of load shedding, generate long-term job prospects for youngsters, and address critical concerns such as poverty and inequality.

Ndhlela said that the devotion and leadership of the four redeployed party members had built a solid basis for the good reforms that the party sought to implement.

“As these young leaders embark on their new roles, we are inspired by their commitment and energy to focusing on garnering youth to support MKP in the coming elections,” said Ndhlela.

In addition, Ndhlela said they looked forward to working closely with them in the campaign for a two-thirds majority in the 29 May general elections.
