CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and his police oversight, and Community Safety MEC Reagan Allen, are calling on Police Minister Bheki Cele to immediately release fourth quarter crime statistics.

They said Cele has no justifiable reason to further delay the release of the statistics, which were supposed to be released on May 17.

The third quarter statistics released in February this year, painted a grim picture of the Western Cape.

The statistics revealed that more than 1,300 people were murdered in the province between October and December last year.

Six of the province's police stations also featured in the country's top 10 stations with the most murders.

Allen said withholding the release of the statistics suggest that Cele is hiding something.

"Given the various mass shootings that occurred in parts of the cape metro during the fourth quarter, we are expecting worsened crime statistics, but we need to be able to assess the data holistically to fully understand the situation."
