Schmidt Receives Massive Benfica Severance Payment
December 13, (THEWILL) – Portuguese football club, Benfica, has confirmed a financial settlement with former head coach, Roger Schmidt, announcing an €8.7 million compensation package on Thursday.
The agreement concludes Schmidt’s tenure at the club, which began in 2022 and was originally set to continue until 2026. The 57-year-old German coach led Benfica to their 38th league title during the 2022/2023 season, a significant achievement that was overshadowed by his early dismissal in the current campaign.
Schmidt was removed from his position after just four days of the league season, citing a challenging start to the competitive period. Benfica’s official communication to the Portuguese stock exchange (CMVM) detailed the mutually agreed compensation arrangement.
The substantial severance payment reflects the premature termination of Schmidt’s contract, which still had considerable time remaining before its original expiration date.
Portuguese coach, Bruno Lage, has since taken the helm at Benfica, guiding the team to a strong second-place position after 13 rounds of competition. Lage’s leadership has seen the club narrowly trail league leaders Sporting by just two points, indicating a competitive and dynamic season in Portuguese football.
