It's all fine, right? Uli Hoeneß insists Bayern Munich and Thomas ...

Bayern Munich

Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß and Thomas Tuchel have a very strange history.

There are reports that a certain Josep Guardiola talked to then-president Hoeneß in 2018, convincing him of Tuchel’s suitability for the Bayern job after Carlo Ancelotti was fired, only for Hoeneß to prioritize a failed charmed offensive for legendary coach Jupp Heynckes. Heynckes decline and Tuchel went to Paris Saint-Germain instead.

Bayern would not make the same mistake twice five years later, acting fast by dumping current coach Julian Nagelsmann and appointing Tuchel to the job. With Tuchel’s reign lasting barely over a year, however, with the club sacking him and then trying to get him back after their search for a replacement went awry, perhaps there was the feeling that a different, more acrimonious mistake had been made.

Maximilian Koch captured a quote by Hoeneß, which was in turn captured by @iMiaSanMia, which indicates that Bayern’s former president believes there is no ill will between the two sides: “We parted ways in a totally okay way. I don’t hold grudges — even though I see his time here very critically.”

Was the comment about Tuchel’s time with Bayern necessary? Probably not, but it would not be Hoeness if he did not tack it on at the end. With the chapter of Tuchel at Bayern now finally closed, it is now Vincent Kompany’s turn to take the wheel.

What is Kompany cooking? Are the Pep comparisons really warranted? We discuss all that and more — including parallels to another “Guardiola disciple” in Mikel Arteta — on the newest edition of our podcast! Listen to it below or on Spotify.
