The Vincent Kompany era at Bayern Munich got off to a smooth start as the Bavarian giants thrashed second-division Ulm in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Harry Kane came off the bench to score the final goal of a 4-0 win in stoppage time, while Michael Olise got an assist on his competitive debut following a summer move from Crystal Palace. England captain Harry Kane was amongst the scorers as Vincent Kompany's first competitive game as Bayern Munich manager ended in a 4-0 DFB-Pokal win over second-tier Ulm.

The first round of the cup was a mismatch as Ulm, who were promoted from the third tier last season, struggled against their illustrious opponents.

Thomas Muller struck twice in three minutes early in the first half to hand Bayern the advantage and Kingsley Coman added a third with 11 minutes to go.

Substitute Kane, who was introduced midway through the second half, completed the rout in stoppage time by heading home a Muller cross.

The 31-year-old scored 44 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions for the German giants in his debut season in 2023/24, but ended the year without any silverware.

Kane then struck three goals as England reached the Euro 2024 final in the summer, but his fitness and form were called into question in some quarters during the tournament.

Bayern finished a lowly third last season behind champions Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart, while suffering a UEFA Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid and a humiliating second-round DFB-Pokal exit to Saarbrucken.

Former Burnley manager Kompany joined Bayern in the off-season following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

They brought in midfielders Joao Palhinha and Michael Olise from Fulham and Crystal Palace, respectively, over the summer, and Olise came off the bench to set up Coman's goal against Ulm.

Kompany said after the win: "The clean sheet was important. Defensively, when we lost the ball, that was the best part of our game - how we recovered the ball.

"It was good to see the team remain disciplined and get the result. Mentally, we're ready [to challenge for the title again]."

The Bavarian side begin their Bundesliga campaign away to Wolfsburg on Sunday, August 25.
