Bangladesh vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 1 Live Score and Updates from Sylhet: After completeley opposite World Cup campaigns, Bangladesh and New Zealand turned their attention to the Test format and look to gain valuable points in the World Test Championship. New Zealand will hope to capitalise on this after the break while Bangladesh will need to go into the rebuilding phase once again and avoid a collapse here. Having lost the toss, New Zealand's hopes of early wickets rested on Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson. As he has so often been, Southee was on the money right from the start, while Jamieson was wayward at times, but he too did a decent job of testing the batters. Despite beating the bat on a number of occasions, neither of the two pacers were able to draw the first blood. Brought on as the first change, Ajaz Patel got the ball to spin sharply and breached the defence of Zakir Hasan. Despite getting that breakthrough, the Kiwi bowlers were put under pressure by Najmul Hossain Shanto which left Tim Southee searching for bowling options. He turned to the golden arm of Glenn Phillips and the latter repaid the faith shown in him by getting rid of the Bangladesh skipper. As the first session in this first Test comes to an end, neither side will be too disheartened with the way proceedings panned out in the two hours of play. After the newly appointed Bangladesh captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, Zakir Hasan and Mahmudul Hasan Joy had the tricky task of surviving the first hour against the new ball. Although the two openers did not look comfortable at times, they applied themselves well and were quick to pounce on loose deliveries. Coming in at number 3, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto got off the blocks quickly as he took a liking to Ajaz Patel. Shanto kept finding boundaries at will and raced to 37 before the same approach led to his downfall. With Mominul Haque still relatively new at the crease, the onus will be on the set Mahmudul Hasan Joy to take the Bangladesh innings forward post-lunch.
