Ballon d'Or 2024: Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona and Spain wins ...
Aitana Bonmati has won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for a second successive time following more club and international success with Barcelona and Spain.
The midfielder fought off competition from Barca team-mates Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo to win the award.
She enjoyed another stellar year in 2024 after helping Barcelona win the UEFA Women's Champions League, scoring the opening goal against Lyon in the final.
The 26-year-old was also named player of the competition and helped the club win a fifth consecutive Liga F title, scoring eight goals and claiming 11 assists.
"Good evening and thank you very much for your applause," the back-to-back Ballon d'Or Feminin winner said. "I’m so grateful for being here to receive my second award, but as I say this is not something you can do alone. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful players who help me keep growing and become a better player.
"I would like to all my team-mates because, without them, I wouldn’t be here. I would also like to thank my club, Joan Laporta, thank you for everything you’ve done for us. And I wouldn’t want to forget my colleagues who have let me experience some wonderful moments.
"And finally, my family that surrounds me, supports me. We’ve been through hard times together but I’d like to thank you all.
"Thank you very much. It’s been a pleasure to be here again. I thank my team-mates and my club who give me everything and make me a better football player every year, thank you."
Bonmati’s honours continued at international level, too, and she produced the goods when it mattered after scoring in a 2-0 win over France to win the UEFA Nations League final.
This was the sixth edition of the award, as Bommati matched Alexia Putellas' tally of two Ballon d'Or Feminin crowns.
It marks her second award in a row and while grateful to receive it, she admitted there was nothing like winning the first.
"I think that there is nothing like the first time but it’s true that I’m so thankful for being back here, what we do isn’t easy," she explained. "I’m so grateful for being back here.
"In the end, I’m part of a group effort and I’m surrounded by wonderful players and my national team and I am thankful because without them I wouldn’t be the footballer I am."
