In a recent post-match interview, Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s defensive performance following a 1-1 draw in the Cosafa Cup.

Safa confirms the appointment of Helman Mkhalele as the second Bafana Bafana assistant coach

Mkhalele lamented the squad’s lack of compactness as a key factor that allowed their opponents too much room to maneuver, ultimately resulting in the equalizing goal.

“That is where we lost it.

“We were not compact enough. That allowed them more space to run into to play the forward passes, and end up getting the equalizer,” Mkhalele reflected.

Stepping in for head coach Hugo Broos during the tournament, Mkhalele has been given the responsibility of leading a young and relatively inexperienced team. His player selections for the Cosafa Cup have been carefully chosen to give younger talents the chance to showcase their abilities on an international stage. Mkhalele pointed out defensive gaps that highlight areas requiring more cohesion and improvement.

Despite the frustrating result, Mkhalele’s pride in his team’s effort was evident.

“Coming into the game, I’m happy for the team. I’m proud of my team and the performance that they gave, even though we didn’t get the result we aspired to achieve,’ he remarked.
