Bafana Bafana's Final 23-Man Squad for AFCON Qualifiers Against ...

By Sello Masilo

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named his final 23-member squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville. The announcement comes ahead of two pivotal back-to-back fixtures, as the South African national team looks to secure vital points in Group K, where they are currently tied at the top with Uganda. The squad will first face Congo in Gqeberha on Friday, 11 October 2024, and then travel to Brazzaville for the return match on Tuesday, 15 October 2024.

Broos, known for his direct and no-nonsense approach, expressed concern over Bafana’s defensive frailties in recent matches. “You can’t concede two or three goals in almost every game and expect to win by scoring three or four. Those things have got to change,” Broos remarked. His focus on tightening the team’s defense indicates that these matches against Congo will be crucial not just for securing points but also for restoring balance and discipline within the squad.

Key Selections and Notable Absentees

Among the key players returning to the squad is captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who missed recent matches due to injury. His return offers much-needed experience and leadership at the back. However, Broos has dropped several notable names, including Al Ahly star Percy Tau, who opted out of the squad for personal reasons, and Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa, who has yet to break into Broos’ final selections despite a solid domestic season. In defense, Siyabonga Ngezana was left out due to injury, with Thabiso Sesane earning his first call-up after an impressive season with Orlando Pirates.

Other key players in the squad include forwards Lyle Foster, who continues to make waves in the English Premier League with Burnley, and Iqraam Rayners, whose goal-scoring form will be critical in these encounters. In midfield, Teboho Mokoena and Luke Le Roux provide stability, with creative spark expected from Themba Zwane and Patrick Maswanganyi.

The Path to Qualification

South Africa’s path to AFCON qualification hangs in the balance, and these two matches against Congo are pivotal. Bafana are currently tied on points with Uganda, and with only the top two teams from Group K qualifying for the tournament in Morocco, there is no room for complacency. A strong performance against Congo could see Bafana Bafana edge closer to securing their spot, while anything less could complicate their route to the 2025 tournament.

Broos is targeting maximum points from these fixtures, emphasizing the importance of defensive improvements. His concerns are not unfounded, as South Africa conceded five goals in their first two qualifiers, drawing 2-2 with Uganda and narrowly defeating South Sudan 3-2. While their attack has shown promise, Broos insists that defensive solidity will be the key to success.

Upcoming Fixtures and Ticket Information

Bafana Bafana’s clash with Congo on 11 October will be held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00. The return fixture will take place in Brazzaville on 15 October. Fans can purchase tickets for the home game through Ticketpro, with various outlets offering tickets for those looking to support the national team live.

Broos’ Message to the Team and Fans

As Bafana Bafana gears up for these crucial encounters, Broos has urged his players to step up and embrace the challenge. He remains confident in his squad’s ability to deliver, provided they can overcome their defensive weaknesses. “We must restore balance,” he reiterated during the squad announcement. The team will assemble in Johannesburg on 5 October before traveling to Gqeberha for their final preparations.

For South African football fans, these matches present an opportunity to rally behind the national team as they push for AFCON qualification. While the squad has its share of challenges, Broos believes that with the right focus and discipline, Bafana Bafana can secure the results they need and make a strong statement on the continental stage.
