Atalanta 0-0 Celtic Stats: Bhoys Battle to Crucial Champions League Point

Celtic had to withstand a lot of pressure in Bergamo, but they came away with a brilliant point following a 0-0 draw against Atalanta on Tuesday evening. Look back at the UEFA Champions League match with our Atalanta vs Celtic stats centre, plus the key post-match Opta facts.

Celtic battled to a crucial point at Atalanta tonight, drawing 0-0 despite the Serie A side having the lion’s share of possession and attempting 22 shots compared to the Scottish team’s tally of 4.

This goalless draw takes Celtic to four points after three games in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League league phase. That’s only one fewer than unbeaten Atalanta (5), and comes after a heavy 5-1 victory in their opening match versus Slovan Bratislava followed by an even heavier 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 2. The fact that they recovered from such a demoralising defeat last time out, and replicated Arsenal’s UCL result in Bergamo earlier this season, deserves some credit.

Kasper Schmeichel put in a fine display in the Celtic goal, making six saves on the way to keeping a clean sheet – Celtic’s first in a Champions League game in just over seven years.

The Danish goalkeeper’s performance helped his side end a run of seven successive Champions League defeats against Italian clubs. In fact, away from home, it was the first time in eight attempts that Celtic had avoided defeat at a Serie A side.

A point isn’t a disaster for Atalanta, who will still be confident of progressing through the league phase of the competition, while it was also a fifth successive clean sheet in a major European match.

Atalanta vs Celtic Post-Match Facts Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has made six saves in each of his last two UEFA Champions League appearances. Tonight he became the first Celtic goalkeeper to make as many as six saves and keep a clean sheet in a Champions League game on record since 2003-04. Atalanta tonight became just the second team on record in the UEFA Champions League (2008-09 onwards) to have 20+ shots and 50+ touches in the opposition box and not score a goal, along with Paris Saint-Germain against Borussia Dortmund in last season’s semi-final second leg. Tonight’s goalless draw has ended a run of 85 consecutive games in major European matches without a 0-0 for Celtic, with their last 0-0 draw coming against Benfica back in September 2012 in a UEFA Champions League match. Celtic have kept a UEFA Champions League clean sheet for the first time since September 2017 in a 3-0 win over Anderlecht, ending a run of 18 games without one in which they shipped 51 goals. Mario Pasalic had six shots without scoring for Atalanta tonight, the joint most by an Atalanta player in a UEFA Champions League match without finding the net, along with Duván Zapata against FC Midtjylland in December 2020.
