Sky Sports apologises for 'insensitive comments' during Aston Villa ...

Sky Sports has apologised for “insensitive comments” made during coverage of Everton’s 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Commentary duo Bill Leslie and Andy Hinchcliffe had compared Everton manager Sean Dyche, who was sporting a black armband in memory of a recently deceased supporter, to a “croupier” (a casino worker).

Dyche was wearing the armband in tribute to Everton supporter Michael Jones, 26, who died earlier this month while working on the construction of the club’s new stadium.

To mark his passing, Everton players and staff wore armbands in tribute to Jones, while a minute’s applause was also held in the 26th minute of Sunday’s game. Sky covered the applause tribute on 26 minutes.

The comments from Leslie and former Everton player Hinchcliffe provoked widespread criticism online, with the broadcaster subsequently apologising for the offence caused.

It is understood both commentators have expressed regret at their actions.

A statement to The Athletic said: “Comments made during the Aston Villa v Everton game were insensitive and regrettable.

“We have spoken to everyone involved in the coverage including both the commentators and have reminded them of their responsibilities and the need for care and sensitivity.

“We apologise for any upset or distress caused by these comments.”

Everton have lost their opening two Premier League fixtures and their next game is against Wolves on Saturday.
