JOHANNESBURG - Kaizer Chiefs fans showed their ugly side on Saturday as head coach Arthur Zwane was hit in the face by an object thrown by a mob of disgruntled supporters in the aftermath of their 1-0 loss to Supersport United at the Royal Bafokenng Sports Palace on Saturday.
The severity of the injury has yet to be revealed, however, at the time it prevented Zwane from doing his post-match media briefing after he was escorted off the field by club officials and police.
“Unfortunately, he [Zwane] picked up a bit of an injury to his eye. I don’t know how, or what happened. I just saw him now putting some ice on his eye, so I’ll find out the details when I get back to the changeroom,” explained assistant coach Dillon Sheppard.
Zwane has been under severe pressure for much of the DSTV Premiership season. A string of inconsistent results failed to ignite a realistic league title challenge and losses to AmaZulu in the MTN8 semi-finals and to arch-rivals in the Nedbank Cup last four consigned Amakhosi to an 8th successive trophy-less season.
The ugly scenes that marred the game in Rustenburg suggest that the Amakhosi faithful have run out of patience with one of their own legends and his position has become untenable. It remains to be seen whether the PSL will take action against the Glamour Boys or whether the club will yield to their supporters' unsavoury show of frustration.
A top five finish in the league is the best that Kaizer Chiefs can hope for in this campaign. While many other clubs would take that as an achievement, it seems it’s not enough for Chiefs’ entitled fans who remember the club’s glory days before AirPods, smart watches and TikTok were invented.
