The critical security cluster ministries of police and defence – both bedevilled by a legacy of resource constraints and state capture – have new leadership in the form of Senzo Mchunu and Angie Motshekga.

The veteran politicians are both schoolteachers by training and each head portfolios crucial to the safety of South African citizens.

Mchunu replaces Bheki Cele as the police minister, under whose seven-year tenure the murder rate rose to a two-decade high.
