Prices of the saris range between Rs 1.5 to Rs 6 lakh.

With her son’s wedding around the corner, Nita Ambani, the founder of Reliance Foundation, went sari shopping in Varanasi. She met loom owners and weavers, and bought at least 50 Banarasi saris, an ANI report said. Showing appreciation for their craftsmanship, Ambani also invited Banarasi merchants and craftsmen to her hotel to pick out more saris, and placed more orders with them.

Chhote Lal Pal, a third-generation Banarasi handloom weaver, is excited that Ambani liked one of his Lakkha buti saris. “If Nita Ambani wears a sari made by me at her son’s wedding, everyone will see it on TV and social media. Today, the work done by my generation seems successful,” ANI quoted Pal as saying.

Each Lakka buti sari, for which the loom is prepared thrice as opposed to once in other saris, takes 60 to 62 days to make, Pal told ANI.

Ambani also chose a particularly exquisite piece known as the Hazara Buti sari, adorned with approximately 35,000 intricate silver motifs. Each Hazara Buti sari takes 40-45 days to complete, mentioned the ANI report.

Creating a Banarasi sari, intricately woven with delicate designs, involves the efforts of 20 to 25 people. The process begins with preparation, including drawing and designing the layout. Next, the map is created, and punching is done. Leaves are then cut before the sari reaches the handloom. Throughout these steps, the sari is handled by a team of 20 to 25 individuals.

All saris are made using real zari, intertwining silver (58-60 per cent) and gold (1.5 per cent) threads. Prices range between Rs 1.5 to Rs 6 lakh.
