Argentina secured only their third-ever victory against the All Blacks – and their second on New Zealand soil – but a bizarre phase of play proved to be key to Saturday’s success.

Scott Robertson’s side had a slender 30-28 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes, but Agustin Creevy’s try just two phases after this All Blacks error put Los Pumas in front, and they held on to claim a famous win in Wellington.

Argentina claim second victory in New Zealand

In a bizarre passage of play, New Zealand stole an Argentina lineout around halfway, but were quickly tracking back to their own line. A pass from Ardie Savea at the base of a ruck fell to floor, and this was followed up by another misplaced pass from Damian McKenzie.

All Blacks legends left stunned as Scott Robertson’s men ‘outplayed’ by Argentina side that are ‘in the conversation’

Argentina could easily have scored off this directly if not for the pace of Rieko Ioane tracking back, but a powerful scrum and some strong pick-and-goes eventually got Los Pumas over the line as Creevy burrowed over.

Before this moment of madness, New Zealand looked to have put the game to bed as Mark Tele’a crossed the Argentina whitewash, but it was pulled back for a forward pass in the build-up. Argentina later compounded this with a penalty, but the All Blacks actually stole the lineout, which in turn led to this strange set of errors.

An eventful first-half saw Sam Darry and Anton Lienert-Brown cross for the All Blacks, but other scores from Lucio Cinti and Mateo Carreras helped make it 20-15 at half-time.

Argentina took an early lead in the second-half through Franco Molina, but this advantage quickly vanished as Tele’a put his side back in front.

Following the odd play above,  Creevy’s try – along with Santi Carreras’ conversion – gave Los Pumas a five-point advantage heading into the final exchanges of the game; and later another Carreras penalty eventually gifted his side an eight-point victory.
