The Warriors of Zimbabwe qualified from Group J along with Cameroon, as Kenya and Namibia were brushed aside.

They qualified exactly two years after FIFA lifted a ban that had been imposed on them due to government interference. Plausibly, Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Divine Lunga is part of the team that spurred them.

Lunga, though, has been used as a back-up for Italy-based left-back Jordan Zemura. Nevertheless, he has remained upbeat and key to the Michael Nees-coached side.

The 29-year-old has revealed what he envisions after helping Zimbabwe qualify for the 2025 AFCON to be held in Morocco.

“I’m happy because of what we have achieved as a team despite the challenges. It’s what we want, and that we are qualified with one game to spare is very inspiring,” said Lunga.

“Most importantly, for me this is the second time qualifying and going with the team. Now, our target would be to finish at the top of the group, but personally, I want us to reach a whole new level at the tournament.”

In his last AFCON appearance, Lunga became a darling among the fans after stealing the show when he marked out Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah when Zimbabwe played Egypt.

Lunga is one of the PSL players that played a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s qualification to the AFCON finals.

The others include Washington Arubi, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Douglas Mapfumo of Marumo Gallants, SuperSport United, and Polokwane City FC.

Marumo Gallants’ Daniel Msendami is also part of the squad, which is headlined by former Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe are in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers along with Bafana Bafana.

The group also consists of Rwanda, Benin, Lesotho and Nigeria. Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa are tied on seven points, while Zimbabwe anchors the group with two points.
