Michail Antonio is played in by Lucas Paqueta, whose chipped ball sees the striker beat the offside trap and finish cooly past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Duvbravka in the 21st minute.

You do wonder if Newcastle's defensive shuffling after that Jamaal Lascelles injury — with substitute Emil Krafth coming on at right-back. Tino Livramento shifting from right-back to left-back and Dan Burn moving from left-back to centre-back — played a part in that goal, with Antonio breaking through in the space between Krafth and the right-sided centre-back Fabian Schar.

But the 30-year-old receives treatment on the pitch, before doing a light warm-up on the sidelines and attempting to carry on playing, before lasting only a few minutes and then being replaced by Emil Krafth.

Another defensive injury blow for Newcastle, who lost Sven Botman to an ACL injury last week and are already without Nick Pope due to a shoulder issue.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti says decisions about the futures of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos will be made at the end of this season.

The veteran midfielders are out of contract at the end June, having signed one-year extensions last summer.

Modric, 38, and Kroos, 34, have remained key parts of Ancelotti’s Madrid squad, making 33 and 38 appearances respectively in all competitions.

“Everyone is talking about next season except us,” Ancelotti said ahead of Madrid’s home game against Athletic Bilbao tomorrow. “Luka, like everyone else, within the context of this season, wants to finish it well, winning if possible and competing until the end.

“We will make decisions individually when the season is over because we have time to do it. I don't think anyone is interested in talking about it now".

On the talk that Kroos will stay and Modric will leave, Ancelotti added: "The feeling I have is that I see them very well, ready to prepare at this end of the season.

“For us and them, the thought is the same: to finish this season well, this is a very, very important month.

“We are in the best situation to get the best out of ourselves, and they are thinking about the same thing.”

Rodri: Every game a final now

Manchester City midfielder Rodri says every game until the end of the season will be “like a final” as his side bid to repeat the treble.

City trail Arsenal and Liverpool by a point in the Premier League title race, with a crunch home game against the former tomorrow.

Pep Guardiola’s side also have a Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid on the horizon, as well as an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

City won all three of those competitions last season as they completed a momentous treble, the first in their history.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be decisive,” Rodri said about tomorrow’s game against Arsenal, “but it will be very important for our confidence, and we will show them that we are here again.

“It’s not just this game that’s like a final, it’s all of them from now until the end of the season.

“We’re still in every competition, but any game that you lose can practically leave you out of the running.

Premier League - Figure 6

“That’s the level that this league demands from you, to reach between 90 and 100 points to be able to win the league.

“So, we have to win practically every game and that starts against Arsenal, who are currently the league leaders.”

City have at least 13 matches remaining this season, with 10 in the Premier League, both legs of their Champions League quarter-final and that FA Cup semi-final. That could rise to as many as 17 if they reach the finals of both cup competitions.

Pochettino wants empathy from Chelsea fans towards owners: 'They are suffering'

Mauricio Pochettino wants Chelsea fans to empathise with the club’s owners and says the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium are “suffering” amid the team’s poor form.

The Boehly-Clearlake group bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 but the west London club has endured a difficult time since then.

Despite huge expenditure on transfers, Chelsea finished 12th in last season’s Premier League, with Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter sacked during the campaign.

This season, Chelsea have also struggled under Pochettino and are 11th, but did reach the final of the Carabao Cup and are into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

“I'm going to support the owners that invest and that arrived at the club in a very difficult situation,” Pochettino said.

“The intention is very good. The owners are trying to develop a different project than before. Fans need to understand that it is a new project with different ideas.

“What we cannot say is they are not investing and that they don’t have good intentions. They are suffering.”

Chelsea host Burnley later today knowing a win could see them rise as high as eighth.

Mainoo doubt for Brentford trip with illness

Erik ten Hag says Kobbie Mainoo is a doubt for Manchester United's Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday evening.

The midfielder missed training on Friday after returning from England duty with an unspecified illness.

Mainoo, 18, made his first senior start for his country in Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Belgium — three days after making his debut as a substitute in the defeat to Brazil.

"He skipped training because he was ill," said Ten Hag at his press conference on Friday.

Asked whether the midfielder would recover in time for Saturday's 8pm kick-off in west London, the United manager added: " I don't know, we hope. Today he is there, not fully recovered but we still have many hours before kick-off."

The central midfielder has become an integral part of Ten Hag's plans in a breakthrough season for the club — starting in each of his side's past 12 league games.

Kane fit for Bayern vs Dortmund but Neuer out with injury

Harry Kane is fit for Bayern Munich’s crunch game against Borussia Dortmund — but captain Manuel Neuer will not be available.

Kane, 30, missed England’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium during the international break due to an ankle problem, while Neuer, 37, withdrew from the Germany squad after sustaining a left adductor injury in training.

“Harry Kane trained fully with the team yesterday,” Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed on Friday. “He’s feeling good and will play."

Van de Ven to return for Spurs against Luton - Postecoglou

Micky van de Ven is set to return from injury for Tottenham's Premier League match against Luton Town on Saturday, Ange Postecoglou has said.

The Netherlands international was substituted off in the 49th minute of Tottenham’s four-goal victory at Aston Villa earlier this month with what appeared to be a hamstring problem. He subsequently sat out the three-goal loss at Fulham on March 16.

Van de Ven was included in his nation’s provisional squad for their matches against Scotland and Germany, but he did not feature in either game.

"Micky has trained for the last couple of days," Postecoglou said of Van de Ven. "He feels good, so he is available."

Postecoglou added that Spurs had not picked up any new injuries during the international break.

Botman went against Newcastle advice to have surgery on initial ACL injury - Howe

Eddie Howe says Newcastle United defender Sven Botman went against club guidance to avoid surgery following his initial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Botman was ruled out for at least six months earlier this month after a scan showed he would require surgery on the ACL issue.

The 24-year-old Netherlands international first encountered a knee problem against Brentford in September, initially going undetected for two games.

Despite a two-month rest period to avoid surgery, Botman faced another setback in the same knee during Newcastle's 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Howe has confirmed that Botman has now undergone successful surgery on the injury.

Asked why there was no operation initially, he said: "It was (played led). Of course the medical team advised Sven. Ultimately they can only make a recommendation. He sought specialist opinion and they helped him. That is how it went. We don't have the benefit of hindsight, I wish he did.

"The operation has gone well, there was no other damage to the knee and it's just the ACL which is a great thing."

The injury will keep Botman out of this summer’s European Championship.

Klopp 'understands' Alonso's decision to remain at Leverkusen

Jurgen Klopp says he "understands" why Xabi Alonso has decided to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite speculation of a return to Anfield —where the Spaniard played during his career — following the announcement that Klopp would be leaving at the end of the season, Alonso has chosen to stay in Germany.

Klopp said: “Being a young manager at a club doing really well, I had a similar situation. I did pretty much the same if you want and never regretted it.

That’s pretty much everything I can say about it.

“He’s doing an incredible job there. Leverkusen have a good team and they will probably keep their team together. That’s possible this year. Not every year is like that.

“I understand why he wants to do that (stay).”

Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will remain as Bayer Leverkusen head coach beyond the end of this season.

In his press conference on Friday, Alonso explained that Leverkusen was the “right place for me”.

The Athletic reported on Thursday that Liverpool have long been aware that the Spaniard was unlikely to leave the Bundesliga club and are pursuing other managerial targets as they continue their search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

“My job is not over here,” Alonso said. “Putting everything together, I’ve taken this important decision. I am convinced it’s the right one.
