A Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing in South Africa on Sunday after one of its main wheels flung off the plane during takeoff.

A Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing in South Africa on Sunday after one of its main wheels flung off the plane during take-off.

A video of the incident showed smoke coming out of the unprotected wheel hub as the FlySafair flight landed on the runway at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa's Johannesburg.

Both the undercarriage and right wing partially collapsed in the incident, the landing video showed.

According to the FlySafair spokesperson, no one was injured in the incident as the ground crew informed the onboard crew about the missing landing wheel immediately after the Cape Town-bound plane went airborne.

"The crew were alerted to the observation and the decision was taken to return to Johannesburg," FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon told local outlet EWN Eyewitness News.

"Flight FA212 adjusted course back for Johannesburg and entered a holding pattern near Parys to burn off some fuel to lighten the aircraft for landing," he said, adding that the plane made a low pass over the airport, so experts could assess the landing gear before permitting the crew to land.

"The wheel affected was one of the two attached to the left rear landing strut. The aircraft proceeded into a second holding pattern over Centurion to burn away remaining fuel before their final landing approach," the spokesperson said.

Notably, this is not the first incident related to Boeing 737 aircraft.

Earlier in August last year, a Southwest Airlines plane made an emergency landing at the US's Houston airport after ground crew noticed flames coming out of one of its engines.
